For your Job Search

Looking for Help

More people than ever are competing for fewer jobs in a difficult economy. But, one thing you must keep in mind: What has worked before still works! It's just going to take a little longer and, perhaps, be more stressful. As you go though your job search, here are some things to keep in mind.

Do's and Don'ts for YOUR job search:

DO continue to develop your skills even during your job search.

DON'T think because you were qualified then that you are as qualified now. Technology changes quickly and you should plan on keeping up.

DO give the employer a reason to hire you. What need can you fill or what problem can you solve for the employer.

DON'T think "I need a job" is a qualification, because it's not. So, don't ever say that during an interview, no matter how badly you need a job.

DO remain positive and look at any rejection as an opportunity to improve your job search.

DON'T take rejection personally. It's not you, it's how you present yourself and that can be changed.

DO highlight your skills, abilities and experience.

DON'T use age to emphasize your background. Instead use your accomplishments and strengths.

DO use what works in your job search. What works is whatever resource helps get you the job.

DON'T limit yourself to the hottest trend. Want ads, for example, still help job hunters find employment everyday.

DO look at your job search as a…job. Times are tough and this is serious work. Put the effort in to your job search that it deserves. Stay positive.

DON'T get caught up in all the media reporting. Good news never sells newspapers. Companies are hiring every day and people are finding jobs everyday. Don't give up; believe that your day will come.
