Regardless of the position, interviewing can be stressful; especially if you are not prepared. We believe there is absolutely no excuse for not being prepared for an interview. Preparation is often the difference between success and failure. Here are ten tips to improve your chances of succeeding on your next job interview.

1. BE ON TIME – If you’re serious about the interview you may even want to make a dry run so you allow plenty of time to get to the actual interview. If you are going to be unavoidably late you should call the interviewer, so make sure you have the necessary contact information.

2. BE PREPARED – Research the company. Know some background, latest news, and issues the company may be dealing with.

3. BE YOURSELF – Don’t over stress. Look at every interview as an opportunity to improve and learn something about yourself.

4. BE FRIENDLY – Relax and smile when meeting your interviewers.

5. BE PROFESSIONAL – Regardless of the position, a firm handshake and direct eye contact will always impress the interviewer.

6. BE READY – You should have copies of your resume (not folded) even if you have previously sent one to the company. You may want to have examples of some of your work if appropriate (writing or design work, for example).

7. BE AN EXAMPLE – Your interviewer is “looking” at you as a possible employee. Look the part by being well groomed and well dressed.

8. BE CURIOUS – When you are asked if you have any questions, have some! You can have these written down or some may come up during the interview. Show an interest in what you’ve just heard.

9. BE ORGANIZED – Have a small note pad and pen so you can take notes during the interview and ask questions later.

10. BE POLITE – Using a business card you’ve gotten from the interviewer, promptly write thank you notes to each person you’ve met during the day and make sure you spell their names correctly.
