The first day on a new assignment marks a new chapter in your life and can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. You want to make a positive first impression and get acclimated to your new working environment. Here are some tips to help you navigate the waters and make your first day a successful one.

Do Your Homework

First and foremost, you should do some initial research about your new company and learn as much as you can. If you are starting with a manufacturing company in Knox County, you might want to learn about its history, industry background, the products it produces, etc. Fortunately, this is pretty simple to do by looking on the Internet and visiting the company’s website. It will ensure that you’re prepared, and your manager will probably be impressed with your knowledge.

Arrive a Little Early

Ideally, you will show up a little before you’re expected, but not too early. According to Holly Paul, PricewaterhouseCooper’s U.S. recruiting leader, “this demonstrates responsibility and passion. Just as you planned to arrive at interviews about 15 minutes early, that’s a good interval for your first day, too.” If you’re unfamiliar with the traffic patterns on your way to work, it’s smart to test your driving route out ahead of time or leave extra early to give yourself some wiggle room.

Be Friendly and Introduce Yourself Right Away

Rather than waiting for your new co-workers to make the first move, you should take the initiative when it comes to making introductions. Whenever you get the opportunity, go up and introduce yourself to break the ice. Make it a point to be friendly and courteous to build a base level of rapport right away. Also, be sure to use a firm handshake and direct eye contact.

Take Notes When Needed

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re getting a barrage of information thrown at you, and it will take some time to digest everything. That’s why it’s a good idea to take notes of key information such as:

  • Coworkers’ names
  • Daily tasks
  • Break times
  • Your schedule

Not only will this help you remember important details and keep you organized, but it shows that you take your new job seriously. This will be a positive reflection on your dedication and should be appreciated by your manager.

By having a game plan and going the extra mile, you can have a successful first day on a new assignment. Just remember these important points.

  • Learn as much as you can about your new company ahead of time.
  • Show up slightly ahead of time.
  • Be the one to initiate first introductions.
  • Keep notes of important information.
