Listen to your staffing personnel

This might seem like an obvious tip, but you’ll be surprised how many people ignore this one piece of advice. These are the people who are your best allies. They WANT you to succeed. Your success is their success. Listen to their advice and heed it. Many of the things they go over with you are important, even when it doesn’t seem important at the time. They will tell you where to go, when to get there, what you will need to start your new position, and how to succeed. If you don’t listen now, you have already opened yourself up for failure. Don’t let an easy little thing — such as failing to listen well — get you started on the wrong foot.



Follow the rules

Every company has its own rules and regulations. These have been developed over time, and often reflect the company culture. Observe the dress code, take breaks only when they are allowed, limit your cell phone use when permitted (if at all), and listen to your supervisor. As the newcomer (and someone who may be interested in landing that permanent role), tread lightly in the first few weeks, observe others’ behavior, and listen before you speak.


Know the company

Nothing will impress a company more than you knowing a little about their operation. Use the internet to your advantage, to research the company, its leaders, and your colleagues. Get to know as much as you can about the company to show that you are truly invested in the job.


Learn what you can

Be eager to learn as much as you can about your job. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your supervisor would rather you ask than have you make a costly mistake that will cost the company money. Take the initiative to help out in other areas when needed. This proves to the company that you can be a team player. And that leads to the next tip:

Get to know your co-workers as soon as possible. You can do this with a smile and a hello. Save the additional socializing for the breakroom. Remember, you are there to work. Be nice and receptive, but leave the talk on the floor for work-related topics. And always remember not to gossip. There is no faster route to dismissal than gossiping.


Perform as if this is your permanent job

Treat your temporary position like it is your permanent job. Always do the best that you can. Show up for work, be on-time, and be willing to put in the extra effort to prove that this is a job you really want. Be kind to your co-workers and don’t argue with your supervisor or anyone you work with. If you have a problem, be an adult and talk things out calmly and respectfully with your supervisor. Showing this company that you can respond wisely to any situation will go far in their decision when hiring for permanent help.


Be patient while you wait

This might be the most difficult task you have. It is hard to wait for an offer on a job when you have done everything right to land that position. Be patient and continue conveying your interest in the job by doing the best you can. If and when a formal interview comes up for the job, be appreciative and remind your boss what an asset you can be to their company.

Finally, even with all these tips to help you land a permanent position, we all know that nothing is ever absolute. You can do everything suggested here in your temporary staffing role and you still might not get an offer as fast as you want. If this is the case, don’t give up! And above all, don’t just walk out on the job. Talk with your staffing company first. Leave every company you have been assigned to with a solid reputation and in good standing. This will go far in helping you land your next position. It might take a while, but you will eventually get a permanent position if you give it time and put in the right effort.
